From March 17, 2023 post.
Yesterday, several members of your Gallup Fire Department participated in “The Fire That Burns Within” training. We were joined by members of the Navajo Nation Police Department and McKinley County Office of Emergency Management. This training covers topics such as mental health awareness, suicide prevention, resiliency, resource management and building an effective mental health program.
Police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and paramedics often work on the front lines of suicide prevention. They are called into situations in which a person may be suicidal — even if not reported as such — and they serve as a resource for people who are experiencing serious emotional, mental health, and substance use issues.
But statistics show first responders may be at a heightened risk for suicide themselves, because they work in high-stress jobs with repeated exposure to traumatic events. That’s why the ability to recognize suicide risk is so vital within their own departments or units.
Several members of your Gallup Fire Department took the Yellow Rose Pledge which is a commitment for the caring of our brother and sister firefighters, removing the stigma associated with mental health issues and being faithful to the mission of saving those who save others.
