From February 16, 2023 post.
911 has been designated as the Universal Emergency Number and today your Gallup Fire Department wanted to honor the 55th anniversary of the first 911 call ever made.
This process started in 1957 when the National Association of Fire Chiefs recommended a single number for citizens to report fires. More traction was gained in 1967 when the Presidents Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice recommended a single number be established for citizens to report emergencies across the country.
Later in 1967, the FCC meet with AT&T to find a means of establishing a universal number and in 1968 AT&T announced that it would designate 911 was the universal emergency number.
On February 16th, 1968, Senator Rankin Fite completed the 1st 911 call in Haleyville, Alabama.
In the last 55 years there is no way we can calculate how many lives have been saved with the use of 911 but your Gallup Fire Department can recognize that the staff at our McKinley Metro Dispatch Center answer these calls and save lives every single day.
