February 14th – 21st is Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Education Week. Each year the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners promotes the week to focus on fostering sensitivity and respect for people diagnosed with dementia. One of the goals of the week is to help coordinate and promote advancements in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. While the increase in the number of dementia cases is a cause for concern, the outlook continues to improve as more methods for treating and improving the quality of life for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients.
Here are some quick facts about Alzheimer’s and Dementia:
- More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million.
- About 1 in 9 age 65 and older (10.7%) has Alzheimer's.
- Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women.
-1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
- In 2022, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the nation $321 billion. By 2050, these costs could reach nearly $1 trillion.
Organizations across the country provide educational support for staff members and family during this week. Some of the ways to participate include:
- Learning the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s.
- Learning to recognize early onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms.
- Engaging in memory care activities such as:
1. Learn a new language, or how to play a musical instrument
2. Play board games
3. Work on Crossword or number puzzles
