National Human Trafficking Awareness Day | Cardinal Nation
From January 12, 2023 post.
Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
This day is designed to bring attention to a crime that leaves a lasting toll on human life, families, and communities around the world.
Human trafficking is considered a modern form of slavery. This illegal act involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain labor or sex. Traffickers use violence, manipulation, or false promises to lure their victims into trafficking situations. Trafficking victims usually experience physical and/or psychological abuse. They might also endure sexual abuse, food and sleep deprivation, threats to family members, and isolation from the outside world. Family members of the victim may also get threatened.
The people that may be the most vulnerable to trafficking are:
1. Have an unstable living situation
2. Have previously experienced other forms of violence such as sexual abuse or domestic violence
3. Have run away or are involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare system
4. Are undocumented immigrants
5. Are facing poverty or economic need
6. Have a caregiver or family member who has a substance use issue
7. Are addicted to drugs or alcohol
Here is how you can help:
1. Learn the red flags of trafficking
2. If you suspect someone is a victim of human trafficking, contact the National Human Tracking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. You can also contact local law enforcement by calling 911.
3. Write or call your legislators and let them know your support policy that combats human trafficking.
4. Support events that improve awareness in your community, schools, and neighborhoods.
5. Empower young people to make the decision to leave an unsafe or suspicious environment.
