From January 11, 2023 post.
It is winter time and your Gallup Fire Department wanted to remind everyone that home fires occur more in winter than in any other season.
Half of all home heating fires occur from December through February.
1 in every 7 home fires and 1 in every 5 home fire deaths involves heating equipment.
Remember these safety tips:
1. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from any heat source such as fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, and space heaters.
2. Keep portable generators outside of the home and as far away from it as possible.
3. Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.
4. Space heaters should not be plugged into extension cords or surge protectors.
5. Keep fireplace ashes in a closed metal container at least 10 feet away from your home.
Working together we can put a freeze on Winter fires!
