From December 7, 2022 post.
It is that time of year when Christmas trees are being put up in homes all across town. The safest Christmas tree to use is an artificial one but many still love the nostalgia and the smell of a real tree in their home. Your Gallup Fire Department wants to share these Christmas tree safety tips:
For live trees:
- Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
- Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.
- Make sure the tree is placed at least 3 feet away from any heat source.
- Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit from the home.
- The most important tip is to water the tree every day.
For all trees:
- Use decorative lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords.
- Read the instructions on how many light strands can be connected together.
- Don’t overload electrical outlets.
- Turn off the decorative lights before you go to bed or leave the house.
