November is National Diabetes Month which focuses attention on the growing cost of diabetes on American’s health. From the physical, emotional, and social effects to the financial and damaging health consequences, diabetes impacts more than 34 million people in the United States.
How common is diabetes?
- It is one of the world’s fastest growing chronic diseases.
- More than 34 million Americans have diabetes, which is nearly 11% of the U.S. population. Of those 34 million, approximately 7.3 million of them are undiagnosed.
- Every 17 seconds, an American is diagnosed with diabetes which comes to about 1.5 million new cases a year.
- An estimated 88 million adults have prediabetes.
How do you help prevent diabetes?
1. Manage your AIC, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
2. Get regular checkups with your medical provider.
3. Make physical activity part of your normal routine.
4. Follow a proper diet.
