A couple of nights ago, Crew A of your Gallup Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment complex on a report of an oven on fire. Upon arrival crews noted smoke coming from the apartment. Upon entry crews found the fire was contained to the oven and they utilized a portable fire extinguisher to suppress the fire. After the fire was out the crews ventilated the structure to ensure that no hazardous air quality readings were noted.
The most important thing to note is that the residents of the apartment were able to safely evacuate the apartment. Next week is Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme is “Fire Won’t Wait, Plan Your Escape”. Even though this incident was small, it still involved a fire in a structure. The occupants were able to escape and that is what is important. A fire can happen at any time in your home. Make sure your family knows what to do in the event of a fire by designing and practicing a home fire escape plan.
