October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Approximately 1 in 8 women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among women in the US only after skin cancer. There are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors currently living in the US.
Here are some ways to reduce your breast cancer risk.
- Limit alcohol intake
- Stay physically active
- Don’t smoke
- Avoid radiation exposure
The American Cancer Society has the following recommendations for the early detection of breast cancer. These recommendations are for those with average risk of breast cancer. If you are at high risk, please consult your physician.
Women 40 – 44 years of age = if you wish to do so start an annual breast cancer screening with mammograms
Women 45 – 54 years of age = get a mammogram every year
Women 55 years of age and older = Continue to conduct annual screening or switch to every 2 years. Continue screening as long as you are in good health.
