School will start very soon and the students will be participating in fire drills. Annually in the United States, fire departments respond to an estimated 3,230 structure fires in schools that result in an average of 1 death, 39 injuries and $37 million in fire damage.
But do you practice fire drills at home?
Annually in the United States, fire departments respond to an estimated 346,800 structure fires in homes that result in an average of 2,620 deaths, 11,070 injuries and $7.3 billion in fire damage.
It is mandated by fire codes that fire and evacuation drills occur in schools, but you are more likely to be killed or injured by a fire in your own home.
Your Gallup Fire Department wants everyone to have a home fire escape plan. This plan should include working smoke alarms, knowing 2 ways out and then staying out until we arrive.
Remember to get out and stay out.
If you would like more information on home fire escape plans, please call your Gallup Fire Department Fire Prevention Office at 505-726-5448.
