The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week has been announced and it is FIRE WON’T WAIT. PLAN YOUR ESCAPE. Fire Prevention Week this year is October 9th to 15th, and it is a commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire which began on October 8th, 1871. This horrific fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
Today’s homes burn faster than ever before. You may have as little as 2 minutes (or even less) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.
If you would like additional information on home fire escape plans or smoke alarms, please call the Gallup Fire Department Fire Prevention Office at 505-726-5448.
