Gallup Fire Department Has Received Questions About the Firework Restrictions Placed in the City

Your Gallup Fire Department has received questions about the firework restrictions placed in the city. To answer this question we wanted to cover the fireworks that are prohibited.

1. Missile-Type Rockets:  These are defined as a device similar to a stick-type rocket in size, composition and effect that uses fins rather than a stick for guidance and stability and that contains no more than twenty grams of chemical composition.

2. Helicopters/Aerial Spinners: These are defined as a tube containing no more than twenty grams of chemical composition with a propeller or blade attached that spins rapidly as it rises into the air with a visible or audible effect sometimes produced at or near the height of flight.

3. Stick-Type Rockets: These are defined as a cylindrical tube containing no more than twenty grams of chemical composition with a wooden stick attached for guidance and stability that rises into the air upon ignition and produces a burst of color or sound at or near the height of flight.

4. Chasers: These are defined as a paper or cardboard tube venting out the fuse end of the tube that contains no more than twenty grams of chemical composition and travels along the ground, often producing a whistling effect or other noise.

5. Firecrackers: These are defined as a small, paper-wrapped or cardboard tube containing no more than fifty grams of explosive composition that produces noise and a flash of light.

The following fireworks are also prohibited except those used in approved events that have gone through the permitting process.

1. Display Fireworks: These are defined as devices primarily intended for commercial displays that are designed to produce visible or audible effects by combustion, deflagration or detonation, including salutes containing more than one hundred thirty milligrams of explosive composition; aerial shells containing more than forty grams of chemical composition exclusive of lift charge; and other exhibition display items that exceed the limits for permissible fireworks.

All other fireworks except for those prohibited and listed above are restricted to areas that are paved or barren and/or areas that have a readily accessible source of water for use by responsible persons.

The easiest way to determine if the fireworks you are purchasing are legal to use inside of the city limits is to purchase them from a vendor located inside of the city. Each of the firework vendors located inside of the city have been inspected by the Gallup Fire Department to determine that the fireworks being sold are legal. Remember even legal fireworks must be used in paved or barren areas with an accessible source of water.

If you have any questions about fireworks please call the Gallup Fire Department Fire Prevention Office at 505-726-5448.
