McKinley County issued the following announcement on April 13.
SCAM ALERT
There is a scammer calling people using a program that looks like it's coming from our office number (505)863-1410, identifying himself as deputy Gary James. He has been telling people they have missed court or a traffic ticket or outstanding warrant. They are asking for personal information and for payments over the phone.
DO NOT GIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION OR PAYMENT INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE.
The Sheriff's Office does not operate that way. If you believe you have an outstanding warrant or traffic citation you can contact the Magistrate Court and check on that. The Sheriff's Office does not take payments over the phone.
Please share this with as many people as you can to prevent others from being a victim of this scam.
Remember, when in doubt, don't give your information.
