CITY OF GALLUP: Firework Seasonal Hazards

Fw

City of Gallup issued the following announcement on June 29.

The Gallup Fire Department wants everyone to have a safe and wonderful 4th July season but discourages any use of fireworks during these dry, hot, and WINDY conditions. Fires can move quickly, putting neighborhoods at risk. In the past week, several large brush fires have occurred within the City limits near homes and in vacant lots. We have been lucky so far that no one has been hurt and no structures were involved.

Although fireworks are legal, this does not mean fireworks are safe. Remember these are explosives and should be used responsibly! A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities. Before shooting fireworks, make sure you have plenty of space. Avoid areas of dry vegetation or other combustible materials and have a water hose or bucket available in case of a small fire. Keep small children and pets out of the immediate area.

Here are a few more SAFETY TIPS to consider during the 4th of July Season:

  • Children, young and old, should only use them under close adult supervision
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eye-wear
  • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
  • Never light them indoors
  • Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person
  • Light only one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting
  • Never ignite devices in a container
  • Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
  • Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of a fire
Better yet, kick back and let the experts handle the fireworks show at the City’s fireworks display show on the July 3rd. The display show will begin after dark at approximately 9:00 pm from the Sports Complex area. Due to the COVID pandemic, the City urges spectators to stay in their vehicles.
