City of Gallup issued the following announcement on June 29.
Due to the weather calling for another day of high winds, the Gallup Fire Department discourages any use of fireworks during these dry, hot, and WINDY conditions. Fires can move quickly, putting neighborhoods at risk. In the past week, several large brush fires have occurred within the City limits near homes and in vacant lots. We have been lucky so far that no one has been hurt and no structures were involved.
Although fireworks are legal this does not mean fireworks are safe. Remember these are explosives and should be used responsibly! A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities. Before shooting fireworks, make sure you have plenty of space. Avoid areas of dry vegetation or other combustible materials and have a water hose or bucket available in case of a small fire. Have a method of calling 9-1-1 in case of emergency. Keep small children and pets out of the immediate area.
