City of Gallup NM issued the following announcement on May 13.
The City of Gallup City Council passed an ordinance requiring the use of face masks in public on May 12, 2020. The ordinance takes effect on Monday, May 18, 2020.
This ordinance (S2020-4) requires the following:
- Anyone over the age of two wear a mask or face covering while in a public place. The CDC recommends that infants under the age of two not wear masks or face coverings. This portion of the ordinance exempts people that are in vehicles by themselves or with immediate family members, and people engaged in recreational activities that do not place them near non-family members.
- Businesses (including non-profits and government entities) open to the public and food establishments that operate drive-through or curb-side pick-up services, must require customers over the age of two to wear masks or face coverings.
- Businesses covered by the second requirement must post a notice advising the public that they must wear a mask or face covering while within the business or while utilizing the drive through window or curb-side pick-up service, and that if they do not do so, they will be denied entry, removed from the premises, or denied service, as the case may be.
Councilor Fran Palochak stated: “If we as a community do not practice the social distancing, wearing masks in public- if we don’t take this seriously we will never get a handle on it….I want to see businesses open up again…I’m asking the public, please take this very seriously.”
The ordinance is now available at www.gallupnm.gov and there is a downloadable version of the flyer for businesses. Additionally, flyers will be distributed to essential businesses throughout this week.
