Teacher candidates, who are taking state licensing tests for the first time, will have to pay more money upfront to earn their credentials.

According to the New Mexico Public Education Department, the fee for taking the teacher candidate tests will rise to $50 for first-time test-takers. However, if a teacher candidate needs to retake an exam, they can do so for free.

Previously, candidates would have had to pay the full test fee again if they needed to redo the exam.

“We are not in a place right now where we have an abundance of teachers. If there is something that could be a blocker, like a financial component, we need to be looking ahead to make sure there aren’t any barriers that could hinder teachers getting to the classroom," Hope Morales, who is the executive director for Teach Plus New Mexico, told the Associated Press.
